Registering a death

You must register a death within five days, unless the Coroner is investigating the circumstances of the death.

Once you have been told you can register a death please contact the Registry Office to make an appointment (it is necessary to have a pre-arranged appointment). The appointment will take about half an hour and you will collect copies of the death certificate.

You may also wish to consider using the “Tell Us Once” service so that you need not report the death several times to different Government bodies.

  • Tell Us Once - How the Tell Us Once service works to report a death to government departments and local councils.

If you are not from Leicester and do not plan to travel here, you may be able to register at your local Register Office “by declaration”. Please call your local office to arrange this.
