What is a Coroner?

A Coroner is an independent judicial office holder appointed by the local authority. Usually lawyers, they work within a framework of law passed by Parliament.

Each area has one Senior Coroner. We also have an Area Coroner and Assistant Coroners. Area and Assistant Coroners are qualified in the same way and have all the same powers as a Senior Coroner when it comes to dealing with deaths and inquests.
